At Lomar, we manage the entire tanning cycle in-house, from the selection of raw materials to the finished leather, ensuring consistent quality, total control and the possibility of customisation.
Every stage of our process is the result of experience, technology and attention to detail.
It all starts with carefully selected raw cowhide. From that moment on, every step is carried out in our factory: this allows us to control quality in every detail and offer a tailor-made final product for shoe manufacturers, leather goods brands and companies in the fashion industry.
Working in-house also means being more flexible, faster and more sustainable.
Our production process is organised into a series of technical stages, each of which is essential for achieving the desired result in terms of quality, aesthetics and performance. Below is an overview of the main processes we carry out in our tannery.
After purchasing the raw hide, the first step is to trim the edges and select the wet blues, in order to eliminate any unusable parts and ensure a uniform base.
The hides are placed in tanning vats where they begin to absorb tannins, fats and dyes. This is the preliminary step that gives body and softness to the dye, allowing it to penetrate deeply.
A mechanical process that softens the fibres of the leather, making it more elastic and pleasant to the touch, ideal for high-quality items such as nappa and full-grain leather.
Controlled surface abrasion that gives a velvety and uniform appearance, used for items such as nubuck and suede or to improve aesthetic regularity.
A barrel treatment that moves and ‘works’ the skin, making it softer, fuller and more natural, with a fuller, rounder texture.
Using a roller, specific products are applied to the leather to enhance its uniformity and shine. This technique is used to achieve smooth, even surfaces.
Application with spray guns that distribute finishing products onto the leather. It is ideal for providing colour uniformity, resistance and protection to the surface.
A second final trimming phase removes any excess parts, perfecting the product in preparation for classification.
Each piece of leather is carefully selected and sorted by quality category. This step ensures that customers receive items that are consistent and comply with the required standards.
Finally, each hide is measured using certified electronic instruments to determine its exact square metreage, ready to be packaged/wrapped according to the customer’s request and ready for sale and shipment.
